bird mystery

For the last 5 years we have had nesting chickadees in a nesting box in our front yard. They are great fun to watch.
They start off as little speckled eggs. This year we had a nest like this when Sophie checked on Friday.
And yesterday we had this--eggs but no nest. I have no explanation. Anyone want to try to explain where the nest went? We have lost sparrow eggs to predators, so there's been a nest with no eggs. But why the heck would there be eggs and no nest??!

I have no ideas about the missing nest....but more importantly, how can the parent birds take care of the eggs if there is no nest? Do you think the eggs are not viable and the parents took the nest to another location to start over?

I don't think the parents will take care of the eggs without a nest. The nest not only cushions the eggs, but insulates them as well. They are constantly moving the material around, covering and uncovering the eggs, based on the temperature. I think it's possible that they moved the nesting material somewhere else, I certainly don't have a better explanation.

I love the goats in coats! How about knitting a nest?
